❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly do the Mara River crossings happen?β–Ύ
Mara River crossings typically occur between July and October, though the exact timing is unpredictable and varies year to year. The herds cross when food pressure, predators, or instinct pushes them towards the river sometimes they gather for days before crossing, sometimes they cross and re-cross multiple times. Peak crossing months are typically August and September. January–March sees the calving season spectacle in the south.
Is the crossing guaranteed to be seen?β–Ύ
No β€” Mara River crossings cannot be guaranteed on any specific day. Our guides monitor crossing activity in real time and position vehicles at the most active crossing points. Even without a crossing, the northern Serengeti in migration season has extraordinary wildlife density lion prides, massive cheetah concentrations, and the sight of a million wildebeest on the plains is extraordinary in itself. Most guests see at least one crossing during a 2-night northern Serengeti stay.
How dangerous is the Mara River crossing?β–Ύ
The crossings are genuinely dangerous for the wildebeest Nile crocodiles up to 5 metres long ambush the herds as they swim across. Lion prides wait at the exit points. It is one of the most dramatic predator-prey interactions on Earth. For safari guests watching safely from vehicles on the riverbank, it is completely safe. Guides maintain a respectful distance that does not disturb the crossing while ensuring excellent viewing.
Can I book this tour in any month?β–Ύ
This itinerary is designed for June–October migration season. If you're travelling January–March, we offer a dedicated calving season version visiting the Ndutu Plains in the southern Serengeti. April–May and November–December are the green season excellent game viewing with fewer visitors, but the migration is in Kenya or transitioning south. Ask us which itinerary best matches your travel dates.
What is the difference between the northern and central Serengeti?β–Ύ
The central Serengeti (Seronera) is the most wildlife-dense area year-round multiple lion prides, reliable cheetah, hippo pools, and resident leopard. The northern Serengeti (Kogatende) comes alive during July–October when the migration herds and Mara River crossings occur. This itinerary visits both, giving you central Serengeti resident wildlife plus the northern migration spectacle.
Should I fly to the northern Serengeti or drive?β–Ύ
Both options are available. The overland drive from central to northern Serengeti takes 3–4 hours via the Lobo corridor and is itself a game drive with excellent wildlife. The fly option (light aircraft, approximately $280pp) saves time and offers a spectacular aerial view of the Serengeti. We build the drive into this itinerary as a game drive; the fly-in upgrade is available on request.
What happens if the weather is bad during migration season?β–Ύ
The Serengeti operates year-round regardless of weather. Short afternoon showers are common October, and occasionally in August. Rain never prevents game drives in fact, animals are more active after rain and the landscape is dramatically beautiful. Heavy sustained rain is rare during peak migration season (July–September). Game drives proceed in all but the most extreme weather, which is very rare.
