Top 10 Animals You Must See on a Tanzania Safari

April 18, 2026 2 min read Safari Impecc Guides
From lion prides and elephant families to cheetahs, black rhinos, wild dogs, and brilliant birdlife, these are the sightings that turn a Tanzania safari into a story you keep retelling.

Tanzania is one of Africa’s richest wildlife destinations. The Big Five are a major reason travellers come, but the most memorable safaris often include smaller, faster, rarer, or more surprising species too.

Start with lions. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are two of the best places in East Africa to watch lion prides, especially early in the morning when they are active. Elephants are another essential sighting, and Tarangire is famous for large herds moving between baobab trees and riverbeds.

Leopards are more secretive, often resting in trees during the day. Your best chances are in the Serengeti’s riverine areas and around quiet woodland tracks. Buffalo are common but impressive, especially when seen in large herds or standing their ground near water.

Black rhinos are rare, and Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the best opportunities to see them in Tanzania. Even a distant sighting is special because of their conservation story.

Beyond the Big Five, cheetahs are a favourite. Watch for them on open plains where they can use their speed. Giraffes add elegance to every landscape, while hippos bring life and noise to pools and rivers.

Zebras and wildebeest define the migration, but they are also fascinating in everyday behaviour: grazing, calling, protecting calves, and moving with the rhythm of rain. Finally, do not ignore birds. Lilac-breasted rollers, crowned cranes, fish eagles, and secretary birds add colour and movement to every game drive.

A great safari is not only about ticking animals off a list. It is about slowing down long enough to watch behaviour: a lion cub learning to stalk, elephants protecting a calf, or giraffes browsing calmly in golden light.
