Private Safari vs Group Safari: Which One Is Right for You?

April 24, 2026 2 min read Safari Impecc Guides
Compare privacy, budget, flexibility, guide attention, departure dates, and comfort so you can choose the safari style that fits your trip best.

One of the first decisions in planning a Tanzania safari is whether to book a private safari or join a group safari. Both can be excellent, but they suit different travellers.

A private safari gives you your own vehicle and guide. This means more flexibility with departure times, photo stops, pacing, lodge choice, and route design. It is ideal for couples, families, photographers, honeymooners, and travellers with specific interests such as the migration or birding.

Private safaris usually cost more because the vehicle and guide are dedicated to you. The value is control. If you want to spend an hour with elephants or leave early for sunrise, you can.

A group safari is usually more budget-friendly because vehicle and guide costs are shared. It can also be social, which some solo travellers enjoy. Group safaris work best when you are flexible, comfortable travelling with others, and happy with a fixed schedule.

The trade-off is less control. Stops, timing, and accommodation may be set in advance. If another traveller wants to move on from a sighting or return to camp, the group must compromise.

For short trips, budget trips, or solo travellers, group safaris can be a practical choice. For families, special occasions, photographers, and travellers who value comfort and flexibility, private safaris are usually worth the extra cost.

The right choice is not only about price. It is about how you want each day to feel.
