Best Time to Visit the Serengeti: A Month-by-Month Guide

April 17, 2026 2 min read Safari Impecc Guides
Tanzania's Serengeti is magnificent year-round, but each month brings a different safari rhythm. Use this guide to match your dates with calving season, river crossings, clear skies, or predator-rich dry months.

The Serengeti is not a destination with one perfect season. It is a living landscape that changes month by month as rains arrive, grass grows, predators follow herds, and the Great Migration moves between plains, woodlands, and river systems. The best time to visit depends on what you most want to see.

January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. The plains are green, the light is beautiful, and thousands of wildebeest calves are born. This is one of the best times for predator action because lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow the herds closely.

April and May are the long-rain months. The park is quieter, rates can be better, and the scenery is lush. Some tracks become muddy, but travellers who enjoy fewer vehicles and dramatic skies can be rewarded with a very atmospheric safari.

June to July brings drier weather and the migration often begins moving through the central and western Serengeti. This is a strong period for classic safari viewing, with more comfortable roads and excellent predator sightings.

August to October is the most famous period for northern Serengeti river crossings. Crossings are never guaranteed on a specific day, but this season gives you the best chance to witness the drama of wildebeest and zebra gathering near the Mara River.

November and December bring short rains and fresh growth. The herds begin returning south, the dust settles, and the park becomes beautifully green again. It is a lovely shoulder season for travellers who want strong wildlife without peak-season crowds.

If this is your first safari, June to October is the easiest recommendation. If you want photography, babies, and predator activity, January to March is exceptional. If you want the famous crossings, plan for the northern Serengeti between August and October.
